Pastor's Notes — Walking On Water

Week of August 10, 2008

Matthew 14:22-33

The disciples are in a boat, a northeaster flinging them from wave to wave.  Jesus is off praying, yet here he comes toward the disciples, "walking on the water"  -- wouldn't you be afraid?  "Have no fear,"  says Jesus, "it is I."  "If it is you, Lord, yells Peter, "then bid me to come to you on the water."  "come," says Jesus.  So Peter leaves the security of the boat and walks on the water toward Jesus, but suddenly in the face of wind and rain and storm, Peter's faith ebbs and, afraid, he begins to sink.  Jesus immediately rescues him, and the disciples confess Jesus as the "Son of God."  What extraordinary thing have you attempted for Jesus?  When you do, never take your eyes off him!

Prayer for the week:

Glorious God, whose word took on flesh in Jesus, and whose saving grace can be known by all who believe in Christ, open our hearts and minds to encounter your word personally, that the church may more fully express our identity as the body of Christ, carrying on the mission Jesus began, assuring a frightened world of the power of love.  Bless us as we attempt great things for you.  Amen.
