Pastor's Notes — The Lord Is The Great God

Then Ezra praised the Lord, the great God, and all the people chanted, "Amen!  Amen!" as they lifted their hands toward heaven. Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

Nehemiah 8:6

People respond in different ways to greatness.  We respectfully rise when a prominent person enters a room.  We address others by their title or office, such as "Doctor" or "Senator."  When Ezra blessed the Lord, he addressed him as "the great God,"  and the people said, "Amen" as they lifted their hands.  The greatness of God also caused them to bow in humility and worship him.  God's character has not changed since Ezra's time.  He is still the great God.  Let us shout, "Amen!" as we bow humbly before him in worship.

Prayer for the week: Great God, we bless you and praise your name.  We have seen only a glimpse of your true greatness, yet we are humbled before you.  We thank you for reaching down to us in our lowly position and lifting us up.  We can only respond with worship and thankfulness.  Amen.
