Do not rob the poor because they are poor or exploit the needy in court.  For the Lord is their defender.  He will injure anyone who injures them.

Proverbs 22:22-23

God takes a special interest in the poor.  Proverbs warns that those who oppress the poor insult God hinself, who is their maker (14:31).  Conversely, those who show kinndness to the needy lend to the Lord and will be rewarded (19:17).  As God's people, we should show compassion to the poor and the oppressed, because this reflects the character of our Father.  Let us praise God, who defends the poor.

Prayer for the week: God of justice, you are King over all people, rich and poor alike.  We praise you for your compassion for the needy and oppressed.  Teach us to imitate your love, and help us to defend those who cannot defend themselves.  Amen.
