Pastor's Notes — God's Wisdom Humbles Us

Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind: "Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorant words?  Brace yourself, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them. Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?  Tell me, if you know so much."

Job 38:1-4

These verses introduce the last five chapters of Job, which record God's final questioning of Job.  The questions the Lord asks Job reveal Job's arrogance for having questioned the soverign Creator of the universe.  Who created and sustains the world?  God alone.  Who created all the animals and provides for them?  God alone.  Whose justice and wisdom are too great for humans to fathom?  God's alone.  After listening to all these questions, every person should be able to echo Job's reply: "I was talking about things I did not understand, things far too wonderful for me" (Job 42:3).  Let us bow before our Creator in humble worship.

Prayer for the week: O Lord our Creator, we praise you for your wisdom.  By your own power you sustain the universe and all your creatures, and we cannot understand all your ways.  Teach us humility as we reflect upon your greatness.  Amen.
